In memory of Engelbrekt Isfält.

Energy today.
In our attempts to educate in building energy saving design, dimensioning and operation, it was more and more obvious that our efforts had to be positioned in a bigger picture. Our efforts have especially large synergy and interdependence with renewable energy. Major energy savings and a more efficient use, have very large impacts on the implementation of renewable energy. .....more

Fossil energy depletion and emission.
The only possible substitutes for oil and Natural Gas will be expansion of nuclear, coal and renewable energy. Because of armament risks, large scale nuclear with the necessary enrichment, is only an alternative for the developing countries and a few others. .....more

Biofuels, biomass as liquid fuels.
Biomass can be processed and used as a liquid fuel for heating or in internal combustion engines either on their own or blended with petroleum. Therefore, they have the potential to change and/or enhance the supply and use of fuel in many parts of the world. Bio fuel have favourable characteristics, namely clean burning and high rated performance. .....more.

Solar Energy.
Solar energy runs the engines of the earth. It heats its atmosphere and its lands, generates its winds, drives the water cycle, warms its oceans, grows its plants and feeds its animals. This energy can be converted into heat and cold, driving force and electricity. .....more.

Wind energy.
For several thousand years now, man has known how to extract energy from the wind by means of ships, sails or wind wheels.

Wind energy is attractive for many reasons. Like Biofuels and Solar energy, it produces no health-damaging air pollution, forest-destroying acid rain, climate-destabilising carbon emissions, or dangerous radioactive waste......more.

Hydro Energy.
Water constantly moves through a vast global cycle, in which it evaporates (due to the activity of the Sun) from oceans, seas and other water reservoirs, forms clouds, precipitates as rain or snow, then flows back to the ocean. The energy of this water cycle, which is driven by the sun, is tapped most efficiently with hydropower. .....more.

Hydrogen Economy.
The very spectacular "Hydrogen Economy", mainly promoted by the US government, is not going to be ready for any general implementation until around year 2030. This time frame have a general consencus among the scientists and major parts of the Automotive Industry. The peak production and "depletion of oil reserves", will make it necessary to have access to alternative fuels long before 2030. .....more.

New and interesting articles on "Energy Saving Now".
It is about energy saving, comfort and us.

Dimensioning and use of AC/heat pump units.
The traditional dimensioning of units give a general selection of unit capacity that is 2 to 3 times more than necessary. Reasons for this is the goal of more revenue in combination with very simplified calculations. The result is cold but humid air and uncomfortable for most humans. The new variable output AC-units will continue and dry the air, even when the output is lowered near the set temperature and maintain a higher comfort level. .....more.

Heat pumps, moving energy and converting temperatures.
It can be argued that energy use is always a matter of moving the energy from one media to an other. Refrigerators or heat pumps exists for all kind of temperatures and applications, they are all energy movers. The heat pump is a descriptive name of a reversed AC cooling unit. .....more.

Distributed generation and its social impact.
An interesting award winning paper by Manu Avinash and Krishna Kumar, about distributed generation in India. It highlights the benefits of distributed generation in developing countries and the postive social impacts that are possible from it. .....more.

Pulsonex Propulsion Burner/Boiler.
When it was time for me to change burner/boiler in my house, I decided to buy the Pulsonex and combine it with testing and an article at "Energy Saving Now", since it is quite an interesting and remarkable energy saving product. The basics for the Pulsonex, is a propulsion jet engine.

Both the engine and the decompression chamber is encapsulated in a water deposit for cooling and capturing of the generated heat, with 93% efficiency. .....more.

Painting by Susan
Savad First Aid for Home Owners.
We often get the question "I have a poorly insulated home, what can I do to improve it?", it is implied that the improvements should be very affordable, not need major construction work and be effective.

We suggest a set of cost efficient actions that we call "first aid for home owners", together they can lower the energy use with more than 50%. .....more.

Ancient AC units or "relative humidity is more important".
A forgotten AC unit technique is the beaded rope curtains from Asia, often thinner ropes with glass pearls in different colors and covering entrance openings like doors and windows.

The ancient palace gardens have often many fountains, often supplied and driven by nearby cold natural streams. The air movement passes through the cascades of the fountains and the effect is drying of air, This make people feel comfortable in the shadows of the garden and close to fountains. A variant of rope curtains. .....more.

Plug-ín Wind turbine, development specification.
Large wind turbine technology is already one of the larger future energy supplies and small wind turbines have a big potential. What is needed for a common use of wind are turbines that meet a specification that is flexible enough for general application and be possible to mount almost everywhere.. .....more.

Volkswagen symposium unveils diesel strategies.
One week after the Tokyo Motor Show, with all the hybrids and fuel cell cars. In a diesel symposium, Volkswagen AG spelled it out with clarity. They have the alternative to the "fuel cell and hydrogen economy". .....more.

Plug-in HVAC Cogeneration.
Cogeneration is already big in the industrial sector and for larger facilities, it is however scalable and would fit in smaller home level systems. Multi source Cogeneration could be extremely interesting for home level systems and with available technologies it could compete well with the larger generation and distributing systems. .....more.

Plug-in Solar power.
Solar systems in combination with simple connection methods to "The Grid", both from administrative and technical perspective. The equipment should be as easy to install as armatures for light and need no special electrician or experts. It is suitable for mass production and the possibility to manufacture and sell at low prices. .....more.

"The Grid".
The Electricity Grid ("The Grid") in a country is potentially one of the most important tools in building fossil energy independence and the use of alternative energy sources. "The Grid" connects and distribute to the consumers and anyone of them can also be a potential energy supplier, without any technical modifications. .....more.

Energy use and comfort, comparison of Bungalows in Spain.
Why not better than developed countries? 1997 I got involved in an investigation about introducing prefabricated Nordic houses in Spain. This was a study regarding use of prefabricated Nordic construction, for use as rental accommodation, compared to traditional construction in Spain. The project with Spanish bungalows is interesting, because it is a product comparison and it at the same time highlights a general worldwide situation......more.

"Radiator Mess"! Radiator Designs and use. remake
Why not better than developed countries? It is still hope! With all the good engineering channeled to more efficient things and with a good re-thinking of the design and use of radiators/convectors, we can in short time achieve spectacular savings both in energy consumption and first time equipment cost......more.

Thermal Building Codes for developing countries.
Why not better than developed countries? It is large energy savings that can be done with an adequate Thermal Building Code and dimensioning of climate control systems, in some cases up to 70% savings compared to traditional Building Codes and practices in developed countries. This will give necessary efficiencies, needed to an efficient use of biofuels, sun and wind energy. It is absolutely necessary to pave the way out of poverty traps. .....more

Make it comfortable for real People.
The majority of installations in the world are neither designed or dimensioned to minimize the energy comsumption nor to maximize the comfort. The most common methods to calculate and dimension the systems are grossly misleading and waste energy. The method of regulate the systems with only the air temperature, representing only 24% of the human body system, adds to a large waste of energy. .....more

The history of dimensioning temperatures for Stockholm, Sweden.
For dimensioning of HVAC, the calculations are based on the well known formula that assumes a linear relationship between inside temperature, outside temperature and the thermal resistance of the construction. During the last 50 years this formula have been disqualified repeatedly. By specifying dimensioning temperatures in the Building Codes, the over sizing of equipment could be controlled and more correct sizing was achieved. The following is the history of that evolution, .....more

Individual room temperature control.
Research at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) about individual room temperature control shows some interesting and basic results. It should be dealt with in any energy audit of a building. The realities are however a different matter and it is amazing how often we find open doors between rooms with individual thermostats. .....more

Effective Temperature.
Since the human body uses radiation, convection and relative humidity to maintain its temperature, the perception of warm or cold is dependent of all this factors. Effective temperature is a weighted average between air temperature and radiation temperature and is closer related to the human perception. By including both the air temperature and radiation, around 75% of the elements that forms the perception of temperature are covered, instead of around 25% if only air temperature is considered. .....more

Control strategy in BREEZE.
BREEZE contains different installation- and control components representing generic models rather than specific implementations. The components can be combined freely to correspond to the principal operation of any HVAC system. .....more

EU commission suggest common building code for thermal insulation.
A short while ago the EU commission published a very interesting investigation about a suggested implementation of a common building code for Europe. The suggestion is to use the Danish building code as a model. It is a very good initiative and it has been long overdue. We have some very unique experiences of the whole issue, since we studied and worked with it for some 40+ years now. Our experiences are also unique in that sense, that we lived trough the implementation phases of what is suggested. .....more

Abstract, BREEZE simulation program.
The BREEZE program is based on a heat balance method where finite differences are used. An iterative method like that applied in BREEZE, yields a good calculation accuracy. Linear modeled processes are not required. Inside surface heat transfer coefficients being dependent on the difference between surface and space air temperatures can be expressed in a proper way during varying conditions. .....more.

HVAC Calculations and Sizing.
The traditional sizing calculations were and are based on U-values and simple calculation based on a linear relation between outdoor and indoor temperatures with steady state conditions. The method was introduced in the 1920's, to provide engineers with a tool to obtain rough estimations for sizing of insulation and heating systems. Also, the assumption at that time was that we had an abundance of cheap energy resources. It is very important to note that the development of the simplified calculation method was for heating needs and was not meant to be used for cooling. There are no building codes or simplified calculation methods that provide any serious scientific guidance on sizing of cooling systems. .....more.

"Energy Saving Now" invited to NATO ARW meeting.
Some month ago, we were invited to participate as key note speakers at a NATO ARW's (NATO Scientific Programs Advanced Research Workshop) meeting about Sustainable development. The meeting took place 22-25 of October in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. In front of this advanced group of around 50 researchers from 15 countries, we presented two papers......more.

Control of Floor Heating.
Many years ago in the beginning of the 70's, we had a simulation project for Wirsbo AB. - They had started to manufacture plastic pipes for floor heating. The experience was not very good, since it was large problems in using the modern control equipment, especially those based on outside sensors......more.

Focus on California energy crises!

The mystery around 0ºCelsius (32ºF)
In a seminar some years ago, we presented an investigation of the mystery around 0ºCelsius (32ºF). It was shown how the room temperature was affected by variations in the outside temperature when an outside sensor operated the heating system. - One obvious conclusion was that the common simple system with an outside sensor, that does not consider the dynamics of the building, is quite useless and only works with very slow weather changes. It creates more problems than it solves and among these is the coordinated call for energy (peak demand for heating or cooling).....more.

Riksbanken, Stockholm.
(The Swedish Governement Bank)
Reduction of peak demands on electricity grid through utilisation of the buildings dynamic in the operating policy. - The building of Riksbanken is one of many examples on how a lack of knowledge about the laws of nature led to insufficient operating policies for over-dimensioned HVAC. Cooling and heating often worked at the same time and resulted in large peak demands and waste of energy......more.

Renewable Energy, waste and bio mass.
What ever way one look at it, the consumption side is probably the most critical - Knowing that most consumption is 2-3 times larger than it need to be, we will need at least 65% of production resources only to cover the energy waste and more if we continue to neglect natural solutions for peak demands. If we do not do something about this, it is difficult to move from sources with high energy content to sources with less......more.

Fast fixes, re-think control policies. Work with nature!
Learn from the old building traditions - incorporate passive techniques and the building mass in the control policy and avoid peak demand crises......more
