A New Application for Solar Power in Water Reservoirs and Wastewater Ponds
The SolarBee is a solar-powered high-flow circulation device for freshwater lakes, and wastewater treatment ponds, retention basins, and reservoirs.
The SolarBee is a 4 year old, off the shelf technology with installations in over 250 sites around the US, including 4 sites in California.
The machine employs solar (Siemens) panels mounted on a floating structure, and creates near laminar flow for surface renewal to improve water quality in large open surface water bodies. The SolarBee also reduces the electrical demand load for municipal and industrial applications.
Typically the SolarBee will displace about 30 HP or (25 kW) of conventional mechanical aeration for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment ponds, and generate energy savings for a 1 to 3 year payback. In one industrial application, a food processing plant (i.e. cheese plants & wineries) the SolarBees displaced 60 hp (45 kW) of conventional mechanical aeration and had less than a 1 year payback.
The California Energy Commission has provided grants to municipalities under its Peak Load Reduction Program. Other incentives and credits are also applicable to the SolarBee.
